What is actually important is that you need to have a compatible server that backs it up. This server is the one that stocks your raw multidimensional format data. This may sound quite technical, but rest assured that making a choice of server doesn’t fall on you. So you do not have to consider the server something you need to worry about. The pros will handle it.

Just so you have a lead, here are a few names that you might come across: Microsoft SQL Server, IBM Cognos, Oracle BI, Tableau, Qlikview, MicroStrategy. Some of these servers come equipped with tools, but it’s your choice whether to settle or seek out something better suited to your needs.

What else do you need besides the BI tool per se?

Different users have different needs… Depending on the size of your company, the degree of technical skillfulness within the company and other variables, a tool can work wonders or inflict misery. That’s where software consultancy comes in. Before you order a customized tool, you will have a talk with your chosen software development and outsourcing company.

Of course, it’s best to do a bit of homework beforehand. Be sure you don’t just skim over brochures, but rather take the time to read in detail all available (and reliable!) material on the subject and then make an informed decision. It plays out to your advantage, as it makes the process of getting acquainted with your new tool much easier.
